If you pass by Lietuvininkų Square, you should stop by the monument to Martynas Mažvydas.
M. Mažvydas was the author and publisher of the first Lithuanian book, a collection of religious songs called Katekizmas ("Catechism"). It was the book in which Lithuanian alphabet appeared for the first time.
The monument portrays M. Mažvydas holding the "Catechism" and looking at the nearby stone benches which are a symbol of school. The monument was erected in 1997 to celebrate the 450th anniversary of the publishing of the first Lithuanian book. (Sculpture created by sculptor R. Midvikis)
