Alytus

Alytus – the biggest town of the southern Lithuani, near teh river nemunas, 65 km to south from Kauno and 108 km to southwest from Vilniaus. The district, region, town goverment, wards and the centre of catholic deanery, has a position of a municipality. The biggest town of Dzukija, it is considered as a capital of this ethnographic region. Website: www.alytus.lt.

Nemunas is flowing through Alytus from southeasth to northwest. From the old times the city is devided in to two parts: the first Alytus on the right shore and the second Alytus on the left shore. The majority of the city is located on the left shore.

There are 4 churches, 2 geminations, tuberculosis hospital, central region hospital of Stasys Kudirka, sport palace (architect A.Kulvietis), national houseparent, 3 post sections.
In teh second Alytus there is a lake called Dailide, city cemetery, Alytus forest, park of the city and garden, regional museum, wariors cemetary, park of Youth.

There is Jewish cemetery, St. Liudvik church, in the south stands out Alytus mound and flow Alytupis. There is established historical landscape park in the city and stands out stone called Parson. Railway station is located in the west of the city, in Likiskiai.

In the center of the city there is regional museum, drama theatre, museum of A. Matutis, at the bridge over the Nemunas – monument to remember Antanas Juozapaitis. There is Song valley and monument for 400 years anniversary of Alytus in the forest of Alytus. At the forest there is also museum of Nation historical memory, museum of Antanas Jonynas. There is the only circus of Lithuania in Alytus – “Dzūkija circus” (from 1982 years). Park of the city is original for its metal sculptures (authors K. Valaitis, N. Nasvytis, K. Musteikis and others).
