Merkinė is one of the oldest towns in Lithuania, established in the conflux of the Nemunas and the Merkis Rivers, mentioned in 1377 in the Crusaders’ battle descriptions. This is the ancient capital of Dzūkija, surrounded by an incredible landscape, reminding us not only of the battles with the Crusaders, the ancient leaders of Lithuania and Poland, but also of the Russian Czar Petr I stay here. In the area around Merkinė, the old traditions of burning black ceramics still exists. Here begins more than one attractive ecological and ethnological type of trip.
